Common new eBay seller mistakes

There are policies in place by eBay to make sure buyers and sellers on eBay have a good experience.

These policies are important and that’s why we have over 180 million active buyers that are actively spending on eBay which in turn makes selling on eBay is a good business potential. Here we will share a few common policies and rules you need to take note of.

Important new seller policies to know:

Item Location Policy

To make sure buyers have a clear understanding of shipping charges and delivery times, sellers must provide accurate information in their listings about where their item will be shipped from.

Counterfeit item Policy

We don’t allow counterfeit items or unauthorised copies to be listed on eBay.

Drop shipping

Drop shipping, where you fulfill orders directly from a wholesale supplier, is allowed on eBay. Remember that if you use drop shipping, you’re still responsible for the safe delivery of the item within the time frame stated in your listing and for the buyer’s overall satisfaction with their purchase.

Listing an item on eBay and then purchasing the item from another retailer or marketplace that ships directly to your customer is not allowed on eBay.

Here are some things sellers should not do that will increase the chances of their account to fall below standard:

  • Cancel order due to out of stock – make sure you list items that you have in stock. Cancelling items due to ‘out of stock’ reasons can cause you account defects.
  • Case closed without seller resolution – When disputes are filed (such as returns), make sure you respond within the deadline mentioned in the request. This is called the ‘seller make it right period’. If the seller ignores or does not respond, the case will be closed most likely not in the sellers favor.

If both above defects exceed 4 times, and ‘case closed without seller resolution’ is higher than 0.30% from your entire transaction, your account will be dropped to below standard. Below standard will cause your account to have less visibility and higher fees. Recovering from below standard might take up to 1 year.
